Program Description

Within a therapeutic classroom environment that was established in 2004,  our goal continues to strive towards providing all necessary support to students with severe emotional/ psychological disabilities, so that they may benefit from their overall educational experience. Students will continually learn about their personal challenges and develop proven coping strategies in order to successfully return to a mainstream classroom setting.

As a program, we follow a basic philosophy that "coaches" each student on how to recognize internal controls and develop self-assessment skills so they can learn how to appropriately and effectively respond to social situations (rather than impulsively react to situations). Mainstreaming plays an essential part in this learning process, and attempts to improve specific components that a student might find difficult to self-manage.

Students in the E.D. program may also receive additional support from the County of Mental Health Services. An on-site Mental Health therapist works in collaboration with the SPED teacher in order to provide services that include: individual, group and family therapy, daily consultation with educational staff, mediation assessment and crisis management as needed.

Students learn to identify self-awareness skills through the utilization of a highly-structured self-management system within the environment of the E.D. classroom. Within this positive-based support system, students are empowered with countless opportunities to make appropriate decisions that will affect their overall development and educational standing in a beneficial manner. Students also engage in the practice of self-measurement, in order to facilitate personal growth to its maximum potential and develop an understanding of how to be assertive when needed.

The ultimate goal is to have our students completely mainstreamed by their senior year when possible. Mainstreaming is accomplished with the help of educational aides who assist with educational tasks within the mainstream class and provide on-the-spot and learning strategies and interventions.

What is PBIS?

At the very least, its a tremendous resource on effective communication strategies.
